My first introduction to reef sharks came on a remote island in the middle of the Indian Ocean, a few thousand miles off the coast of East Africa. Lost statue of Roman emperor Caligula unveiled

Officials on Tuesday unveiled a massive statue believed to be that of Roman emperor Caligula sitting on a throne and said it came from an illegal dig south of Rome that may have been the site of one of his palaces.
The statue, which had been broken in several large pieces and a head, was first found last January when Finance Police stopped it from being smuggled out of the country by boat at a port near Rome.
The operation led to the arrest of two so-called “tomb raiders” — those who dig up the countryside looking for archaeological treasures to sell on the black market.
But more importantly, the arrests led police to the site near Lake Nemi, just south of Rome, where Caligula was believed to have had one of his imperial residences.

As I’ll be on my way to Buenos Aires this evening for the Foundry Photojournalism Workshop, I thought of posting this potential photojournalism opportunity about Once Magazine.
Once Magazine claims that it will publish three stories of about twenty-five full-screen photographs with captions, an introductory text essay, and interactive features. The magazine will allow photographers to tell their stories by using the iPad as one of the mobile platforms.
The magazine will split all subscription revenue directly with photographers, and its stories will be chosen for their “narrative appeal, journalistic insight, and photographic quality.”
